The Ottoman EmpireThe Ottomans are a very distinct civilization which add much variety to the game. The biggest difference between the Ottomans and the rest is that their villagers train automatically from each Town Center. They do not cost any resources, but they do take longer to train. They can build Mosques instead of Churches. Replacing the Priest unit is the Imam, a Muslim cleric who can heal. The Settlers' population limit and training speed is controlled by improvements in the Mosque. The rest of their buildings are architecturally taken from the Mediterranean Set (which also includes Portugal and Spain.)
Their military is pretty weird compared to the other European nations'. The Ottomans can only make one unit from their Barracks: the bread-and-butter Janissaries. These men wield musket and saber and act like super musketeers. In the Ottoman Stable, the Hussar and Cavalry Archer are available. The Spahi, another unique unit, is one of the strongest mounted soldiers in the game, but can only be shipped from the Home City. While the Ottoman may not have the largest diversity of human soldiers, they have one of the largest arsenals of siege weapons. Aside from the Grenadier, Falconet, Culverin, and Mortar, they also get the Abus Gun, an anti-infantry gun mounted on a tripod. They also get Great Bombards instead of Heavy Cannons (in the Factory and Home City.) The Ottoman navy holds another surprise for first-timers. Their Caravel has been replaced by a slightly superior Galley.
The Ottoman Home City is based around the historical city of Constantinople. It contains many crate shipment and livestock cards (three of those are team cards!). Additionally, the Ottomans have many cards which send or improve artillery units. They are also one of the few nations with access to Asian mercenaries. On the other hand, the Ottomans have poor gathering and building upgrades. Their naval cards and Native relations are average.
