The Portuguese EmpireThe Portuguese are a boomer's dream in the New World. Their biggest bonus is that they receive a new Town Center every time they age up. This means that in the Colonial Age, they can train Settlers twice as fast as other nations. It can be tempting to concentrate on your economy if you play as Portugal, but do not forget that your enemies are probably training an army at the same time. The Portuguese Explorer has an innate ability from the start of the game. He can use Spyglass to reveal a small portion of the map every few minutes. This is very useful for military reconnaissance.
The Portuguese have a large variety of available military units. They can train Pikemen, Crossbowmen, Halberdiers, Musketeers, and Cassadores from their Barracks. Instead of Grenadiers, the Portuguese receive Organ Guns, which could be considered the ancestor of the modern machine gun. Their navy and cavalry consists of the normal units. Because of this variety, the Portuguese are quite versatile and can be shaped to support an early-game or late-game offense. Their Cassadores are the best regular infantry units in the game (they deal very high damage.)
Lisbon, the Home City, has the largest Trading Company of all the civilizations. They can send every possible resource crate and have more cards for their Explorer and Town Centers than most. They have good naval support and are the only ones that can send a shipment of Ronin Samurai mercenaries alone. Their gathering and military upgrades are average, while their Cathedral offers little.
